My name is Alan Chu, age 59, married and living in Hong Kong since childhood. I got in touch with the Moon 10 years ago with a 3-inch refractor, but serious observations only began in 2002 when I acquired a 10-inch Newtonian reflector. With this telescope, a Barlow lens, a Philips webcam and a humble site, I attempted to image the lunar features as much as possible. The images so obtained are now compiled in my “Photographic Moon Book” which is accessible freely on http://www.alanchuhk.com. I love the Moon more than any other sky objects. Every time I watch her through my telescope, she seems to dialog with me in a different manner. The more I dialog, the more I can appreciate her unique character. I guess she shall stay with me forever. Currently I am focusing on the lunar libration zones, also the low-profile features (domes, rilles and wrinkle ridges). I plan to study them in terms of imaging and geology. I am a layman in geology, so I expect it is still a long way to go. My profession is electronic engineering and project management but just retired last year. I completed a master degree in astronomy in 2003, hoping it helps to refresh my astronomical theories. Apart from amateur astronomy, I enjoy classical music, opera and movies produced before 1975. (I do not like computer-contaminated movie scenes). Occasionally, I built vacuum tube amplifiers for audio pleasure. |
